Taking care of your gums and teeth is essential at every age, but it becomes increasingly important as we grow older. Oral health plays a vital role in overall well-being, and older adults are more susceptible to dental issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and dry mouth. These conditions can lead to further health complications if left untreated.

If you have diabetes, heart disease, or take medications that can affect your oral health, it's especially important to prioritize dental care. Managing your oral hygiene effectively can help mitigate the risks associated with these health conditions and support your overall quality of life.

Consider incorporating the following habits into everyday life this holiday season.

1. Brushing and flossing every day.

This might seem like an obvious one, but maintaining overall health is all about incorporating small changes that eventually become habits. Brushing and flossing helps remove that pesky dental plaque — a sticky film of bacteria — that can build up on your teeth and cause tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. Try brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, once after breakfast and again before bed. Whether it’s after meals or snacks or during a favorite show, finding the time to floss is the most important step.

Not sure how to floss effectively? Ask your dentist about using a special brush, water flosser device or pick. Finding a method that works for you is key to making flossing a regular part of your routine.

2. Rinse with Mouthwash

Using an antiseptic or antibacterial mouthwash once or twice daily can be a valuable addition to your brushing and flossing routine. For optimal results, floss and brush first, then gargle with mouthwash. This approach ensures thorough cleaning and fresh breath.

Alcohol-free mouthwash is a great option, offering effective oral care without the harsh taste. You can find a wide variety of alcohol-free mouthwashes at your local pharmacy.

3. Cut Down on Sugary Foods

This will be easier said than done, considering all the sweet, sweet treats and drinks you’ll likely find at a holiday gathering. While enjoying festive treats is fine, indulging wisely can not only help you prevent unwanted weight gain and spikes in blood sugar levels, but also keeps the bacteria (that naturally exists in the mouth) in check. Sugar provides fuel for bacteria, leading to acid production that can erode tooth enamel.

Although enamel acts as a shield against the daily wear and tear of chewing, biting, and grinding, it can be damaged by excessive sugar intake. When enamel is compromised, you may experience increased sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks. Unlike broken bones, damaged enamel cannot be repaired.

4. Stay Hydrated

Many medications can cause dry mouth or low saliva flow (xerostomia), a common side effect that can contribute to enamel erosion. Saliva helps prevent tooth decay by washing away bacteria and leftover food in your mouth. It also controls the bacteria and fungi in the mouth as well as aids in digestion.

If you're experiencing dry mouth, talk to your doctor about potential medication adjustments. Drinking plenty of water or sugarless drinks is essential for overall health and can also help prevent dry mouth. The recommended daily water intake varies based on factors like body weight, activity level and climate. However, aiming for 64 ounces of water per day is a good starting point.

5. Watch for Changes in Your Mouth

As we age, it’s natural for the risk of certain conditions, including oral cancer, to increase. While this might sound concerning, being proactive about your health can make a big difference. If you notice any changes in your mouth, it’s a good idea to get them checked out for peace of mind. If any of the following symptoms persist for more than a couple of weeks, consider seeing a healthcare provider or dentist:

  • A sore or uncomfortable spot in your mouth, lip, or throat

  • A lump or thickened area in your mouth, lip, or throat

  • A white or red patch inside your mouth

  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving your jaw or tongue

  • Numbness in your tongue or mouth

  • Swelling in your jaw

  • Ear pain without hearing loss

Catching potential issues early can help ensure your continued well-being.

6. Regular Visits to the Dentists

Our teeth and gums may become more sensitive or experience changes over time. Overall, visiting the dentist once every six months for a cleaning and checkup is common. By scheduling regular dental appointments, you or your loved ones can protect your oral health, prevent complications and enjoy a better quality of life (with a fabulous smile to boot)!
